This project is a collaboration between three Temple University professors at Tyler School of Art. They are Clifton Fordham (Assistant Professor of Architecture), Abby Guido (Assistant Professor of Graphic and Interactive Design), and Bryan Satalino (Assistant Professor of Graphic and Interactive Design). All three collaborators are fascinated by—and actually live in—rowhouses. The idea formed while talking about the different neighborhoods Philadelphia and their respective rowhouse typologies. The team decided that a joint effort between architects and designers could potentially yield something exciting, so they set about building a project around this topic. They think of it as a “love letter” to the Philadelphia rowhouse. For their Design Philadelphia event, Philly Row will be partnering with children’s boutique Minnow Lane, and artist/educator Miriam Singer. Minnow Lane is a store located in Fishtown specializing in natural and organic children’s products as well as being a gathering place for classes and events geared towards families. Miriam Singer is a painter and printmaker living and working in Philadelphia, and her work squares quite well with Philly Row’s mission. She received her MFA in Painting from Massachusetts College of Art in 2003, and is currently part of Space 1026. She’s worked on numerous Philadelphia Mural Arts Projects and will be installing a mural within Minnow Lane which coincides with the Philly Row event. The common thread between all three entities and their work is a love for Philadelphia’s neighborhoods and built environment.
